On the eve of the LA Auto Show, Mercedes-Benz has taken the wraps off the 2012 CLS63 AMG, the bi-turbo V8 version of its thoroughly restyled and utterly delectable sedan.

AMG's new baby – the M157 5.5-liter twin-turbocharged V8 – is finding a home in nearly every new Mercedes product, and when fitted to the CLS63 the blown mill is good for 518 horsepower and 516 pound-feet of torque... in standard form. Option up for the AMG Performance Package and Merc's in-house tuner turns up the boost from 14.5 to 18.8 psi and output rises to 550 hp and 590 lb-ft of twist. Equipped with AMG's seven-gear "Speedshift" MCT automatic tranny, the CLS63 takes an estimated 4.4 seconds to run from 0-60 in standard guise and 4.3 seconds with the AMG pack. Similarly, top speed also rises from 155 to 186 mph with the performance upgrade. And if you care, both variants clock in at 16 mpg in the city and 21 mpg on the highway.

In addition to the reworked engine and transmission, the front axle has been widened by nearly an inch and AMG fitted its independent adaptive suspension with electronic damping and a three-stage traction control system. The 19-inch, five-spoke wheels are wrapped in 255/35 tires in front and 285/30s out back, while 14.2-inch drilled and ventilated discs are fitted at all four corners.

A special "Launch Edition" will be available when the CLS63 goes on sale this coming summer and comes coated in matte grey paint with a mix of carbon fiber and piano black interior trim, alcantara headliner and AMG sports seats swathed in "Corteccia Pearl" leather.

2011 Mercedes-Benz CLS

The second-generation Mercedes-Benz CLS will debut at the 2010 Paris Motor Show at the end of September, but it's always a good time to read a little more about it - especially now that the Stuttgart-based automaker finally came out with official shots and some initial details.

Instantly recognizable as a segment-creating CLS, the new model inherits its nose's blunt, coupe-derived styling from the SLS.

The CLS is not only Mercedes' 5th Avenue flagship, it's the face of the so-called 4-door coupe market; therefore, it stands to reason that the newest 4-door coupe would be loaded with tech. I'm sure it will be, but other than the full-LED headlamp assembly, there wasn't much mention of anything but looks, materials, and something called PASSION leather in the press release (engine lineups have been accurately predicted by now, anyway).

Inside, the information stack - much like the nose - also feels like it is derived from the SLS with its climate controls in the kink at the bottom. The interior can be had in five different colors, five different trims (3 wood, 2 synthetic), and three types of leather.

The wood choices are high-gloss brown burr walnut, high-gloss black ash, and satin-finish light-brown poplar (by far the coolest if you need wood); if you're feeling a little more sporty, there's always piano lacquer or carbon fiber.

The car's seats and dash are hand-sewn, and the dashboard leather has been pre-treated to handle a lot of direct sunlight (no special forms to worry about here like with BMW's Frozen Gray M3).

A PASSION option nets buyers super-soft, hand-chosen 1.6 mm-thick leather. Mercedes says "the natural pore structure remains intact," but also that "the natural characteristics also remain visible for the most part, [so] the semi-aniline leather requires a very precise manual selection process."

CLS Shooting Brake Concept

The Mercedes Benz CLS Shooting Brake Concept is a preview of the upcoming 2011 Mercedes-Benz CLS, a competitor to the Audi A7, BMW 5-Series GT, and Porsche Panamera. With a long hood, bulbous rear wheel arches, deeply cut styling across the car's side panels, and a swooping roofline, the concept is much better proportioned than the often-criticized 5er GT.

It seems likely that Mercedes-Benz will use the upcoming Beijing Motor Show to preview its next-gen CLS, along with the introduction of what appears to be a production-ready shooting break design. While the moniker is more often spelled 'shooting brake,' MB is keen to point out that the correct spelling is 'break,' as in breaking a horse that draws a carriage. Whatever the name, we're liking what we see from this concept.

From what we can see in these pictures, which we presume show a conceptual shape that's awfully close to what a future production model will look like, the Mercedes-Benz CLS Shooting Break seems to be a much more successful design than that of the BMW 5 Series GT that it will undoubtedly be compared to. We'd also wager that the rear hatchback and flat load floor would prove fairly useful in real life due to a suitably tall roof without too much downward slope.

Powerplants for the next-gen CLS are also previewed by this concept. Expect a turbocharged and direct injected 3.5-liter V6 engine with over 300 horsepower along with an uplevel turbocharged 4.6-liter V8 that puts out around 435 horsepower and over 400 pound-feet of torque. Those engines will reportedly provide a 25-percent improvement in fuel efficiency over the mills they replace and will route power to the rear wheels through a seven-speed automatic transmission.

Not powerful enough for you? Perhaps the 5.5-liter V8, complete with turbocharging and direct injection, in the AMG model will be more to your liking. How does up to 563 horsepower and 664 pound-feet of torque sound? :)
